At the recent Master Football Australian Carnival held at the picturesque surroundings of the Riverview College on the Lane Cove River, two current Terrigal Avoca Panthers represented our club playing for Tasmania, of all states, in the “Supers” division of the carnival.
Tasmania had
some trouble filling the 35-40 age group due to players having other commitments,
so Dave Grimmond and Mal Cooper answered the call from long time Terrigal
player and life member Mick Moore (now residing back home) to help Tassie
hold up there obligations.
Terrigal was well represented at the carnival, besides the two already mentioned,
Mick Moore, ex premiership player and Life Member (Tasmania) and ex Premiership
player/coach Dean Wall (Queensland) also throwing the boots on and showing
they have not lost anything.
After defeating the strong Victoria Metro team (containing no less than Tony
Libratore – Brownlow Medallist) in the first game things looked good
and as a result guaranteed that Tassie would remain in the top division of
this competition. “Spoony” showed why he is held in such high
regard in the BDAFL by starring at Centre Half Back with Mal Cooper’s
(forward flank) trusty boot again showing why he spent most of his playing
career in the Ruck by missing two sitters. But we won and that’s what
counts.
In the second game we fronted up to a BIG Queensland team and we got a touch
up. Spoony or should that be “SPOONA” (as the Tassie boys nicknamed
him) lined up at the first bounce at Fullback on Mark “THE FRIDGE” Roberts,
AFL Life Member and Kangaroos Premiership player. Dave held his own against
the big unit but due to our lack on movement from the middle was shifted
into the fray. Mal (wing-didn’t they tell you he cannot run, centre
half back, forward flank???), well he tried to take some hatchet man out
and ended up with a bung finger as well as a hip injury (some things never
change) that put paid to his carnival.
In game three Tassie still had a chance of winning their division with a
big win over the “Sand Gropers” from WA. Dave again showed CLASS
and was Tassie’s best player in a very classy display.
Shock was the Victoria Metro some how beat Queensland and ended up being
the winners of the age group. We ended up third on % with two wins from three
games.
But great news was to come with Dave named in the ALL-Australian team for
the Super’s age group. A great achievement Dave, and one that you should
be very proud of. And not too bad for someone who had never played a game
in masters before this carnival, bet you NSW will be putting a contract in
front of him very soon with Mal Cooper to be traded to the knackery.
This is the second year in a row that a Terrigal player has won All Australian
honours with Mick Moore being picked last year.
We both have our Tasmanian State Jumpers and I know they will hold pride
of place especially in the cooper household after a few beers.
All in all it was a great experience and something all you other players
can look forward to when you get to the over 35 age group, eh Billy, Andrew
Morrisby.
Next year it’s at Darwin so start saving your reddies for what is a
fun and enjoyable experience.
